My primary NAS is TS-253A, backup is TS-230. Both are running QTS 5.2.7.3256, and now SMB Service 4.15.004. The only use I make of them is to contain backups of files from my network computers. I only power them up when I want to make backups, and only then do I check for available updates to QTS and apps. I use Microsoft Networking (Samba) on the NASs to connect my network computers.
Tonight, both NASs reported an available update to SMB Service to 4.15.004. The update on the TS-253A completed without issue. On the TS-230, the update seemed to hang. After giving it plenty of time (20+ minutes), I concluded it was never going to complete, so I tried rebooting. That also hung, so I manually powered off the system. Upon restart, I again gave it plenty of time, but it never displayed the logon screen. So, I again powered it off and back on. This time, after a long time and lots of disk activity, the QTS logon page eventually appeared, and I was able to log in and resume normal activity.
I looked through recently updated files in /var/log, and couldn’t find anything relevant. I realize I’m not really providing anything to go on. My primary purpose for posting this is to document that this happened, in case it happens to someone else, so we’ll have some history.
