TS-230 SMB Service 4.15.004 upgrade hang

My primary NAS is TS-253A, backup is TS-230. Both are running QTS 5.2.7.3256, and now SMB Service 4.15.004. The only use I make of them is to contain backups of files from my network computers. I only power them up when I want to make backups, and only then do I check for available updates to QTS and apps. I use Microsoft Networking (Samba) on the NASs to connect my network computers.

Tonight, both NASs reported an available update to SMB Service to 4.15.004. The update on the TS-253A completed without issue. On the TS-230, the update seemed to hang. After giving it plenty of time (20+ minutes), I concluded it was never going to complete, so I tried rebooting. That also hung, so I manually powered off the system. Upon restart, I again gave it plenty of time, but it never displayed the logon screen. So, I again powered it off and back on. This time, after a long time and lots of disk activity, the QTS logon page eventually appeared, and I was able to log in and resume normal activity.

I looked through recently updated files in /var/log, and couldn’t find anything relevant. I realize I’m not really providing anything to go on. My primary purpose for posting this is to document that this happened, in case it happens to someone else, so we’ll have some history.

We tried to reproduce this issue on our side but could not replicate the same result…maybe we missed some specific trigger or condition.

Even though you mentioned that there is no useful information in /var/log , maybe our support team might still be able to gather additional details from other system folders.

Would you be willing to open a Support Ticket so that our support team can connect remotely and investigate the situation further?

Thanks for the report! We haven’t been able to successfully reproduce this issue internally, but we will continue to monitor it. If you encounter any further issues, please feel free to let us know.

Yes, I’d be willing to do that. Before opening a ticket, I wanted to see if I could reproduce this by downgrading SMB Service back to 4.15.003, and then letting it automatically upgrade again. I’ve spent some time trying to find instructions on how to do this. Google Gemini told me that SMB Service is part of QTS and cannot be individually downgraded. That doesn’t make sense, as SMB Service was individually upgraded.

If you tell me that I cannot downgrade SMB Service by itself, then I’ll follow your instruction to open up a ticket to allow QNAP to connect remotely.

Thanks.
