TS-233 my experience

Hello,
I want to share my experience with QNAP TS-233. As it is my first NAS, and I haven’t had any high expectations it is doing a good job in my home.

In the beginning I had some issues with the system hanging up after few days and only hard reset worked. I had to send it to Germany service center, and they somehow fixed it (probably flashed bios or something). Now I restart it only once per month to install updates.

It has a quad-core CPU and 2 GB RAM, and I have 2x6GB Western Digital Red PRO HDDs. I think as it is HDD and not SSD it is slowing the system a little bit when uploading photos and thumbnail generation and facial/object recognition is in progress. Need to do some fine-tuning

I am running there:

  • Plex media server – I read some articles about the PLEX and that it is not working well, but I do not have any issues also with 4k videos streaming to 65” 4K Samsung TV.
  • QuMagie – I think this is very good replacement for public cloud solutions (such Google Photos). I love the facial and object recognition. It has only one issue related to the iPhone - Uploading photos stuck if the screen goes off.
  • Container station – I am running several containers there and performance is very good. I have 1 for Homeassistant and it is connected to MariaDB and InfluxDB containers + in the USB port I have Sonoff Zigbee dongle to maintain my zigbee sensors.
  • Also, I am using HBS 3 as a backup service for my Homeassistant, so my data are all backed up in case of failure.

Overall experience is perfect for low-cost NAS. It has some bugs (e.g. during uploading photos the system is slowed down, because several processes are running in the background or Homeassistant app become unresponsive, and I need to restart the container time to time.
