I recently purchased a RM-IR004 IR remote third party remote control as I hoped take advantage of the HDMI output and use it as a direct media server. The 1st hurdle was that, I assumed it would have some rudimentary GUI/virtual keyboard so I could enter my username and password when prompted. I had to instead connect a mouse and keyboard to get past that part. When I done that I found using the IR remote very clunky and the interface limited. Is there better software, app?
Is there a better IR remote, Maybe one with a keyboard on?
In the end I just resorted back to using VLC installed on my Android TV, connected my NAS via that.
NAS are horrible media players, best to use your NAS as the media server, either fancy like Plex or jellyfin or simple like an SMB source for KODI. And leverage a simple android box (Shield) or other streaming device compatible with KODI/Plex/Jellyfin, etc
Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve heard of jellyfin, might give that a try. I still have a Nvidia shield Pro which became rendundant after purchasing a Sony Bravia 4K UR3 because it’s interface was fairly snappy, making the sheild one less piece of clutter under the TV.
If the Bravia let’s you sideload Kodi or the jellyfin client, then I would agree (well rendering of HDR/DV and passout of lossless sound formats could be an issue and here would the Shield shine)
I use a Shield Pro with my LG OLED (G3) and it’s by far better than the built in app (supports dtsx and THD Atmos)
And yeah, using the HDMI output of the NAS is an AWFUL experience. HybridDesk Station should be one of those apps they should throw on the ash heap of history. The apps are all old and awful.
Yes. I run plex on my Bravia 4K UR3. Installed directly from the play store, no need to side load.
It looks pretty but no where as responsive as VLC player, just minus the glitz. Cant stand the double click to un pause whilst watching media on plex plus it doesn’t display the rolling/visual time line where you can seeing where you’re skipping to. You can navigate much better in VLC.
I guess that’s the trade off, VLC just looks basic. As I mentioned I might dust off the Nvidia shield and try that with plex. I also happened to notice Nvidia Sheild Pro is selling for a silly price now if you can get one.
The internet is full of rumors about a Shield2 (based on the Switch 2 SOC) but I doubt NVIDIA is doing any consumer stuff until the AI bubble bursts (fingers crossed).
Until then the existing Shield is getting more and more expensive
Thank you for sharing your experience in such detail, and we’re glad to hear that Plex is now working on your Bravia TV.
You’re right that HybridDesk Station is not really designed to be a full living-room media player. For this kind of setup, we also recommend using the NAS as a media server with an app such as Plex, and playing the content through a client on your TV or streaming device, as the community members suggested above.
Thanks Lucas. Sorry i forgot to mention I’d already installed the plex server on my NAS also.
I’m just comparing the plex client to see which peforms better. Directly through my Bravia 4K UR3 or through Nvidia shield Pro.
It’s just remains for me to set up DDNS so i can view remotely because ISP IP is dynamic.
Thanks for the update, and good to hear that Plex Media Server is already running on your NAS. While you compare the Plex clients on your Bravia and the Shield, Plex’s list of supported Smart TV models may also be helpful:
