TS-453D Not Starting After Clean Shutdown

Hi all,

New to this forum format. I have a TS-453D with 4 x 10TB Seagate Ironwolf drives in RAID 5, one large volume.
Not sure which exact firmware, but latest available or one revision old.
I recently shutdown the NAS via the Qmanager App. When starting it up I get the initial beeps but nothing after (which I only just realised).
The power light is on, network light is on and blinking, all 4 x HDD lights are on but solid e.g. no activity.

Plugging into the ethernet direct and setting an IP address on the same subnet as last known IP address doesn’t help, can’t find the NAS via Qfinder, ping is destination host unreachable.

Seems it just stopped booting/working after the last shutdown. Drives were all healthy before shutdown.

Trying to reset admin password and IP to DHCP via hardware reset for 3 seconds didn’t beep.

Any thoughts?

If the unit is fried, can I take the 4 disks and just put them in another NAS and power up and everything will be good?

Cheers

Willo

Pop the disks out and see if the NAS starts into web setup If that also does not work the NAS could be busted.

You could try a firmware recovery

If the NAS is busted, you can move the drives to a new NAS according to the migration guide

Make sure you have backups in the future …a RAID is not a backup!

Also wondering when some new models are coming, there doesn’t seem to be the selection of models there used to be.

Can’t seem to get a TS-453E here is Australia either.

Thanks for the update and help. I attached a monitor and it’s stuck at a cube type icon and starting.

I’ll try the disk removal option and report back. Luckily I have another NAS here that runs a backup job every few days and have a full backup

No web setup does not need a monitor attached to the NAS, just a browser and maybe Qfinder (if you do not know how to check the DHCP table)

Here you go: QNAP TS-453E-8G 4 Bay Desktop : Amazon.com.au: Computers

Thanks. More just saying that that was where it’s stuck. There’s no LCD on my model

Ta. It’s US model.

I just found a whole bunch of disk activity and the monitor now says do you want to install hybrid desk station.

Something happened overnight

Is that an app or does that mean the data has been wiped and I’m reinstalling the QTS firmware

So, at-worst, you’ll get the wrong mains-input plug. The seller ships to Australia, so ask if they will provide the correct mains plug for the power brick.

If the mains-input cord on the brick is soft-wired (plug-and-socket), just use an Aussie IEC cable, they’re everywhere. Any IT geek will have a few laying around unused.

Again, forget about the HDMI port on the NAS.

Is the regular web frontend now available to access on the NAS ?

That will have to be a job for lunch time. :+1: (to see if it’s available)

I don’t have any lying around :smiling_face_with_tear:

To check if the NAS has hw failure:

For some reason, it all came back online overnight. Something weird going on. Should I be concerned this is a sign of imminent failure and get an new NAS? There were no errors as far as I can see in the logs.

If I do, is it as simple as taking the drives out and putting them in the new NAS and away I go?

Not sure if that is a NAS failure sign, but I have already posted the migration guide further up.

That’s great news—we’re happy to hear your issue has been resolved! If you need any assistance from our Support Team in the future, please feel free to open a support ticket.

Also, since the issue seemed to be related to the boot process, you might want to consider running a Memory test.
How do I perform a Memory test on QNAP NAS ? | QNAP

Thanks!

Spoke too soon. It has been starting and powering down on a power schedule for a couple of weeks now, but today it powered on and did not boot. I reseated the HDD’s and memory, still not starting. It passes POST but not booting. Then I randomly plugged a monitor in again and away it went. Not sure what the heck is going on, but why would it just randomly not boot?

In that case, we recommend you open a support ticket for us, and we will assist you further. Thanks!

Thanks. It’s not in warranty, will QNAP still be able to help

Do you also mean use the “Create a Service Ticket” button on the bottom?
