TS-859U RP extremely slow transfer rates.

Hello, I recently came across a TS-859U RP and it is currently running QTS Version 4.2.6 (2024/06/18), I have 5 4TB WD Red nas drives in a raid 5 configuration. This is a private, in home network, no business use at all.

I’m confused as far as the speed of this device. It takes forever to transfer files to it. From what I can see, it varies between 2M/s to around 12M/s.

It is on a 24 port Gig switch, the network cables are Cat 6 to the switch and from the switch to my computer as well as to the modem/router.

I realize the system is only sata II, but still it should be much faster than what I am seeing.

The question is, can I speed up the network or the drives to a better speed? Is there an issue with the firmware that changing back to an earlier version might help?

Failing that, is it possible to patch in a newer control board to get higher speeds from the system?

Please let me know if there is a solution.

Thanks

You cannot modify the NAS hardware.

Speeds seem low, even this 16 (!) year old NAS model should be faster than that. Make sure all other apps are disabled, Antivir, etc. Plain simple SMB is all you need. Did you enable SMB 2.1 on the NAS ?

Is the NAS fully set up and the RAID synchronization complete? With 5 x 4TB drives, that can take a very long time.

Could be your client computer as well. Anti-virus and other factors.

Try a proper benchmark tool and see what speeds you get.

What model(s) are the HDDs? Are they SMR or CMR drives?

I went and removed everything aside from control panel, App Center and QTS help. Disabled everything I could see to disable, FTP, Apple server etc…I’m not sure what SMP 2.1 is, That does not seem to be a selection that I can find. Under the network settings, I hooked port 1 and 2 together as a shared connection.

No real change in speed.

Yes, fully synched, took almost 2 days.

I rebooted the Modem/Router, rebooted the nas and rebooted my computer. No virus scanner, no VPN, nothing but 1 web page with the speed test and it says I am receiving 95% of my plan speed, which is a 1 Gb plan.. So my computer and the switch seem to be alright.

Quote “The WD40EFZX-68AWUN0 is a CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) drive. It belongs to the WD Red Plus family, which is explicitly designed as CMR for NAS environments.”

As far as I know, they are the correct drives for a NAS, all 5 show the same model number, 2 are a few months older than the other 3, but they are the same type drives, all 5 show the WD40EFZX-68AWUN0 in the drive table, all have been updated with the latest firmware. They are all sata 3.1, the Qnap, unfortunately, is only sata 2, so the speed of the drives should not be an issue.

WD RED Plus are fine, they are CMR

What to do before reporting slow NAS transfer rates to QNAP support? | QNAP

Hello, I’ll do what I can to get the info to you.

First of all, the network is 1 GB, My modem/router is 1 GB, a speed test from my computer to a remote speed test site shows I am getting at least 95% of my plan speed. From the modem I have a Cat 6 cable to a TP Link, TL-SG1024, 24 port Gigabit switch. From there I have a cat 6 cable to my computer and dual Cat 6 cables to a Qnap TS-431P, 4 disk NAS and dual Cat 6 cables to the Qnap TS-859U RP. I have swapped the cables from the 2 NAS just to verify the network speed and cables are all correct. I did enable port trunking on both of the Qnap nas’s. Since I first wrote about this issue, I did tear it apart and put 4 of the dirves back in the TS-431P out of frustration.

I did set up a similar Raid 5 on the TS-859U RP with 5 - 2TB drives and it took just under 8 hours to synch them. The 4 - 4TB drives in the TS-431P synched in less than 2.5 hours.

As for drive speeds, I do not have that function on the TS-859U, at least not that I can find.

That is the current system and it says it is up to date.

And that is the TS-431P

The dashboard with it idle, online

Network connections

A USB3 disk copying to the TS-859U Says 15.9 Mb/s

A USB3 disk copying to the TS-431P Says 57.3 Mb/s

An internal sata 3 disk copying to the TS859U 16.3 Mb/s

An internal sata 3 disk copying to the TS-431P 56.1 Mb/s

And just for kicks, an internal sata 3 disk copying to the USB3 disk 156.3 Mb/s

I understand the TS-859U is only sata 2, which should be half the speed of sata 3,(So they say). The 4 disks in the TS-431P are the same ones that were in the TS-859U so I would think the speeds are alright. It is acting exactly the same with the 2 Tb drives as it did with the 4 Tb drives.

I would think the speeds should be closer to 28-29 Mb/s all else being equal.

They are both running QTS, but there are differences in versions. Is that something that is just the nature of being an older system? Just odd that the performance isn’t there.

Anyhow, let me know if there is anything else I can try or info you would like. Either way, I know why it was such a bargain.

The question about the SMB version was not answered. Windows, in particular, has problems with SMB1; SMB2 should definitely be enabled here.

Also be sure that you have your units correct. Is that Mbps or MBps? Big difference…

Everything on QNAP is MBps.

SMB1 is disabled in Windoze 11… So the answer is whatever the current SMB is.

SMB level on the NAS please

Although if internal.copies via filestation are slow too, something else could be busted

Did you do a speedtest for all drives ?

It is whatever Total commander seems to say. I can only imagine it’s capable of doing the math at running speeds.

If you google M/s it says that’s an incorrect term, it’s either Mbps or Mb/s.

Mega bits per second or Mega bytes per second. 8 Mbps = 1 Mb/s

Since sata 2 is 300 Mbps and sata 3 is 600 Mbps. The shown speeds are extremely slow.

300 Mbps should be around 37.5 Mb/s

600 Mbps should be around 75 Mb/s

I’m getting at least 50 Mb/s to the TS-431P and at times it hits 60 Mb/s which is realistic for a sata 3 device over a gig network.

15 Mb/s is not a reasonable speed for sata 2..

I mentioned that in the long post. The TS-859U does not offer a disk speed test..

The drives that are in the TS431P are 4 of the 5 that were originally in the TS-859U and seem to be working fine. The current drives in the TS-859U are 5 different 2 TB disks and are acting exactly the same.

I didn’t know ou could transfer internally. I’ll set up some test and see what I can see…

SATA2 is 3GBit/s and SATA3 is 6Gbit/s , but that is bus speeds and no spinning disk can reach these

I have no way to check if it’s SMB 1 or 2, QTS v 4.2.6 only lets me turn it on or off..

If Win 11 won’t accept SMB1, then would it transfer at all, since it’s turned off because of vulnerabilities.
