TVS-1688ATX: Multiple apps not working & status LEDs for HDD/SSDs

Hello, I’ve had the TVS-1688ATX for about a month now.

Overall, the NAS runs well, except for the slow support.

The following issues have not been resolved by support so far:

  • Drive Analyzer (paid) isn’t working
  • None of the HDD or SSD LEDs are working (both HDDs and SSDs are installed)
  • The Music Player can’t be installed
  • SSL Encryption license can’t be applied to Cloud
  • Multimedia Player doesn’t play DVD formats at all

My operating system: Win 10 Pro

The NAS has 2 memory slots each with 96 GB installed as per instructions. The firmware is current, not a beta version. A total of 8 HDDs at 4 TB each and 2 SSDs at 4 TB each (cache) are installed. Is there any way to check if the HDD status LEDs are connected properly without having to “take apart” the NAS?

Hello,

if none of the LEDs are working, this looks like a hardware issue.

The NAS is probably running QuTShero h5.2.x.

According to the manual, you can switch off all LEDs on some NAS devices. You can check on your NAS to see how it looks.

Configure General Hardware Settings | QuTS hero h5.2.x

On QTS 5.2.9.x it looks like this:

Cache is not a good idea. It usually only causes problems.

I always use SSDs as storage volume in my NAS.

I always set up my system volume (QTS) or my system pool (QuTShero) on the SSD.

What’s being attempted here? Having a NAS open to the internet is a really bad idea.

Depending on various apps is also unnecessary. What kind of apps are supposed to be for DVD playback? Just use the NAS as a server and play music and movies through clients.

Support is still working on music playback. It should actually work through the app. Playing my own digitized DVDs doesn’t work with the Multimedia app. However, all self-recorded videos do work.

Good to know. I’ll give it a try too once support is done tinkering with my NAS. Now the support team comes straight from Taiwan.

It’s best to use the QNAP as a NAS and then use external players and apps.
KODI or VLC for ISO files, Plex/Emby/Jellyfin as video/audio servers.

It’s best to just forget about all the internal QNAP bloat.

That’s probably the case. Actually, the VLC player should also run on Linux. No idea why it doesn’t work in the Qnap apps or why they can’t just integrate the VLC player there directly.

Hey, thanks a lot.

It worked right away. For some reason, mine was set to standby after 5 minutes and only 10% LED brightness. When it’s completely dark, you can see the LEDs dim very faintly if you look directly at them. No idea why support couldn’t tell me that. I’m curious to hear what their response will be.

Nooo, just run VLC on a player—forget about the HDMI port on the NAS, it’s a NAS, not a media player. (An Android stick with VLC, etc. costs next to nothing compared to the NAS, if anything at all.)

It’s worth a try. It barely costs anything.

I use Plex (freemium) and Jellyfin (free) on my TVS-1288X and various smart TVs (Tizen, WebOS) as playback devices, as well as Android boxes (like the NVIDIA Shield Pro), and it all works flawlessly.

Thanks. Good approach. I’ll give it a try as well.

Could you provide more details about the issue with DA Drive Analyzer not working? Also, regarding the SSL Encryption license not being applicable to Cloud, could you describe the use case you are trying to achieve and the current status you are seeing? Thanks!
