Unlocking the Full Potential of My QNAP TS-464

As an IT professional and tech enthusiast, I rely on my QNAP TS-464 NAS for a wide range of personal and media-related tasks. It serves as the backbone of my home server, hosting my Plex server alongside several Docker-based services, including Tautulli for analytics, PlexTraktSync for seamless media tracking, Paperless-ngx for document management, and even a Garmin sync service that transfers my Withings scale data to Garmin Connect.

For storage, I have two RAID 1 SSDs dedicated to documents and critical files, while my media library is securely stored on four HDDs in RAID 5. This setup ensures both performance and redundancy. Thanks to QNAP’s remote access capabilities, I can watch movies on my phone while traveling and stream music via Plexamp in my car using Android Auto.

What I love about the TS-464 is its balance of usability and advanced features. Beginners can deploy and monitor containers via Container Station, while power users like myself leverage Docker Compose for more complex configurations. QNAP also offers a range of enterprise-grade capabilities, including virtualization and container orchestration, providing enhanced scalability for users with more advanced needs.

To better suit my requirements, I upgraded my TS-464’s hardware with 32GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance for all my Docker services and multitasking needs. Additionally, I replaced the stock fan with a Noctua fan, significantly reducing noise levels while maintaining efficient cooling. These upgrades have made my NAS even more reliable and better suited for my personal and media workloads.

I know QNAP NAS devices can be used for so many different purposes, and I’d love to hear from others in the community! What do you use your QNAP NAS for? Any interesting setups, unique workloads, or cool projects? Let’s share and exchange ideas!

The beast, that would need some dust cleaning. :broom:

Hi,
Didn’t upgrading your RAM to 32GB void your warranty (QNAP said max RAM is 16 GB)?
M

Depending on your jurisdiction,…warranty void stickers are not legal, so as long as you keep the original RAM for RMA’s, you should be fine.

Thanks - I have 16GB of RAM but plan on running QuTS OS. Would have purchased the 32 GB RAM had I known it would not void the warranty.

I should have done more due diligence!

M

Yes I doubt it’s a problem for warranty, as long as it’s not the cause of the RMA. If you would return it with your new RAM sticks melted on the board they would probably say something.
Otherwise just srick back the original RAM and that’s fine.
I have these for a while now and it’s running fine, 24/7.
The only thing I noticed is that the system says that only 31GB is available. I didn’t dig into this to find out why. I think I briefly read that it could be OS reserved (?) but that didn’t convince me.
I have quite a lot of services running now and I’m at 25% usage idle, so no big deal. I think that your 16GB should be more than enough for most use cases.

That’s the amount the iGPU reserves I think

Ah yeah that makes sense.

Hi Undertow20,
Thank you for replying.

I recalling reading of instances of users reporting a small discrepancy after increasing their RAM. They were happy with the performance improvements and were not going to spend any more time investigating.

Tomorrow is my big day for plugging in my new TS-464 and configuring. I’ll see how performance is on Plex, QuMagie, and copying my 18 TB of movies, music, and photos before deciding if I need to go to 32 GB of RAM.
