Update BIOS on TS-h1886XU-RP-R2 to add QXP-3X8PES for expansion unit

I need help on update BIOS on TS-h1886XU-RP-R2 to add QXP-3X8PES for expansion unit. I was able to download the latest BIOS but afraid to update it becuase this NAS used for prtoduction data. It can’t be down for a day in case update failed and I don’t have full backup on one of the share with 64TB data. I can submit the suppoirt ticket but sometime take a day to respond.

Can someone explain me step by step to update thie BIOS if you done it previously or Is there any pay support/service for QNAP in USA? I had serveral TS QNAP products.

Thank you in advance…

Kyi

Well, I can’t help with the bios update, but I will say that you need a full backup of your 64TB data share, particularly on a production NAS.

A RAID IS NOT A BACKUP
A NAS IS NOT A BACKUP

You can use a NAS for backup, certainly, but if it fails.. The point is you need multiple backups on multiple pieces of hardware and locations.

QNAP has a US based support team. You can open a ticket and they can help you.

the QXG-3X8PES and the associated newer expanders like the TL-R1600PES require the BIOS update. From having doing this, and having an ulcer from doing it - I have learned to use the OLDER expander card and the OLDER expander chassis (TL-R1620Sep-RP) when I have to do an expander for an older QNAP system.

But here is the answer to your question -

go here -

find the BIOS for this model, which is 2024-08-09 That is the latest one.

On a PC, format a USB flash drive Fat32. (got a Mac - too bad) - download this BIOS from the QNAP site, and transfer it onto the flash drive. Power down the TS-h1886XU-RP. Pop out all 12 of your drives. Put in the USB flash drive that you just made into the back of the TS-h1886XU-RP.

Power on the TS-h1886XU-RP with the flash drive installed in one of the USB ports and NO DRIVES. Get coffee (or a beer, or something stronger) -

When you come back, you will hear the QNAP beeping - one long, painful BEEEEEEP that sounds like the unit is going to blow up. That is how you know that the BIOS update is done.

Power off, pop in your drives, and now your BIOS is updated. Now you can install your QXP-3X8PES. Personally - I would send back the QXP-3X8PES and TL-R1600PES, and buy the OLDER expander and expander card, where you have to do NOTHING, and it will just plug in and work.
