Upgrade i3 to i7

My TVS-672XT is currently on its way to being repaired. When I get it back, I would like to upgrade the CPU from an i3 to an i7. I know this can be done as I communicated today with a seller on eBay who upgraded the 672XT they were selling to an i7-8700T.

A quick search on the web shows the possibility of using an i7-8700K or an i7-9700K/F/KF.

Has anyone upgraded the CPU in their TVS-x72XT? What needs to be done from a BIOS standpoint? Does QNAP provide BIOS firmware? Just want to know how simple/difficult this is…

Thwre is a few topics about it on the old forum

OK. Why can I read the first thread but the second is asking me to log into the forum? I don’t have an account on the old forum.

Good news is that it looks like the devices are just drop in. Memory seems to be a bit more finicky but we’ll see.

I should ask QNAP to make some “private” sections public

I believe the “T” is the same wattage, others might have cooling issues.

Yeah. Good point. The i3 and the 9700T are both 35 Watts. The others are higher for sure. But clock speed higher as well. I don’t think the QNAP runs as the higher clock speeds. I’ll find out!

Clock speed is on the cpu not the socket. The other’s will run if made for the same socket. But they will run hotter-so a gamble. The “T” series is made for laptops. That is why your model uses laptop style ram.

Yeah, it’s a big performance difference between the i7-9700T and the i7-9700K. We’ll see.
