A little opinion from someone a little more knowledgeable than I would be marvellous!
A few years ago I purchased a TS-569 Pro to save some music and photos from a family members unit that passed away and had to give the unit back to his business partner.
I recently wanted to upgrade the total storage and thought is was as simple as buying new HDD’s and swapping them out.
Apparently not, the 5x 10Tb Seagate Iron Wolf Pro’s exceed the hardware max storage ability.
So my question is… as a main use of file storage (work backup archive and partners photography) and occasional (hopefully soon increased) use as a media streaming NAS
What should I upgrade my TS-569 Pro too, to enable use of not inexpensive 5x10Tb Seagate Iron Wolf Pro’s I’ve plugged in to this QNAP?
Yes the 559 Pro uses legacy file system which limits the storage size expansion.
best to check what NAS you want to purchase. then install the new drives into your new NAS. and then move the files from the 559 Pro via HBS3 or rsync to your new NAS.
you could maybe use a 4 bay NAS and keep one drive as spare else go for a 6 bay nas and either use all 5 drives or purchase another to populate all the drives in the nas. that’s up to you.
how much file storage is used by the 559 pro at present? do you have many photos?
just a word on the useage of the new NAS regarding backups, your NAS is not your backup. always backup your NAS to another NAS or a different media. you could also use the 559 pro as a backup NAS for safe keeping
Cheers Simon,
the 569 had 2Tb drives in before that were approx. 75% full. Hence the want to upgrade the drives.
Any recommendations of models I should to look into?
this is totally down to your requirements AND budget.
Have a look here:
I prefer with AMD/Intel chipsets myself but this is only due to usually better performance.
since you have said the old nas a a ton of photos then I would suggest something that is compatible with QuMagie (qnaps photo gallery) and they supports AI for facial recognition. the USB or m2 AI accelerators work very well with photos.
