Virtualization Station loses USB connection

Hello everyone,

I got a QNAP TS-453D at a good price. Everything is working fine and it’s up to date, but I’m having a problem with a virtual machine in Virtualization Station.

As soon as I shut down or restart the VM, it loses the USB connection.

The log always shows the following error message:

[Virtualization Station] The USB device connected to virtual machine “HomeAssistant” is missing or disconnected.

I’m running Home Assistant as the VM, and a ConBee stick for Zigbee is plugged in. This works without any issues while running.

Is there a solution for this problem? Or is it possible to find out the reason for this behavior somewhere in another log? I always have to manually add the stick again and restart the VM.

QTS is 5.2.10.3577

Virt. Station is 4.2.0.281 (20260812)

Best regards, and thanks in advance for your help.

Holger

USB connections are always a problem on VMStation.

You could try seeing if you can mount them permanently via virsh… but be careful: if you edit the VM in the GUI, all changes will be overwritten (I had to do this once for a “nested” Proxmox — the network adapters from the GUI were all incompatible).

Ok, so virsh directly via SSH to a NAS?

I switched from Proxmox to have everything in one place (previously NAS and mini PC). It worked great there for years.

Ah, just found it, I’ll give it a try tomorrow.

But basically, I’m just changing the VM’s config now, just not through the GUI, right?

Exactly, every time you change anything else via the GUI, the settings you made with virsh get overwritten.

I can’t get it mounted via virsh either… or rather, after every reboot it gets removed again.

I compared the dumpxml before and after the reboot. The following entries are deleted:

<qvs:usbs>
  <qvs:usb bus_num="1" dev_num="24" vendor_id="1cf1" product_id="0030" index="1"/>
</qvs:usbs>

and

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='no'>
      <source startupPolicy='optional'>
        <vendor id='0x1cf1'/>
        <product id='0x0030'/>
        <address bus='1' device='24'/>
      </source>
      <alias name='hostdev0'/>
      <address type='usb' bus='0' port='2'/>
</hostdev>

Using lsusb, the stick is always present on the NAS

[Holger@HomeNAS ~]$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 024: ID 1cf1:0030
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I also find it odd that the bus number increases each time I reconnect…

I’ve now opened a ticket with QNAP too… Let’s see what they say…

I suspect that the stick isn’t compatible. I use my HomeAssistant with a Sonoff Stick, and it works without any problems.

Well, the stick itself works perfectly. I can control everything in HA with it and so on… The only issue was that the QNAP VM forgets it every time I restart everything.

Ok, maybe it really is the stick after all. I just tested it with a Logi receiver and a USB stick, and they both stay connected even after a reboot…

Still, I find it really weird. I’m curious to see what the official support will say.

@manni_das_mammut which Sonoff do you have? I was thinking about getting one a while ago too. But until now, the ConBee had always worked for me.

Hi,

which USB port are you using?

For a while, I had my keyboard and mouse connected via a USB hub. There were absolutely no problems.

I tried all the ports and connected the stick directly, without any extension or anything like that.
