VPN into TS-233 with Starlink

Hey,
For the life of me I can’t find any good directions which actually work to use the qnap vpn service to get onto my nas when away from home. I have the built in remote access disabled. People use vpns with starlink all the time so why do I constantly hit road blocks. I have a UDR and was using the wifiman app to use their built in remote vpn and it worked but not anymore so just want a simple VPN on the nas

Thanks

Normal starlink contracts use CGNAT, so you would need something like QNAPCloudLink or Tailscale

Access QNAP NAS from anywhere · Tailscale Docs (no idea if your limited ARM NAS can run it)…alternative option would be a raspi for Tailscale

QNAPCloudLink would be the easiest as there’s nothing to set up or install.

Thanks for the share! If you have any results from your attempts, please feel free to share them with us.

If you are using ipv4 you are stuck behind CGNAT like @dolbyman said.
If you have the newest router or are using your own router with starlink in bridge mode you should have a world routable ipv6 address and ipv6 ↔ ipv6 works great.

Now how well ipv6 works in QNAP is separate. I can tell you ipv6 with docker semi broken.

Hmm With my service provider I told them my business case and I was moved outside (for want of a better word) the CGNAT and given a static ipv 4 address. Did not cost me anything, and was advertised as a solution if you had CGNAT issues. Is that possible for you?

Might be worth asking.

Starlink charges extra for public IP services…starlink is not a “normal” ISP

Most of the time you want a fixed IP address you pay more. @Colin is fortunate! Generally if you want a fixed IP, they put you in a business plan and require you to pay much more for the same speeds.
