It would be super cool if I could pull my 2 drives directly out of my WD MyCloud Mirror and install them into my new QNAP TS-233-US 2 Bay NAS and have it just work, ie, all my data would now be accessible via the TS-233 with no data migration required. Anybody have an idea if this is likely or fantasy?
The WD product is WDBZVM0080JWT-20, the drives are WD Red NAS WD40EFRX-68WT0N0.
Not sure how WD make their product but I assume it might be difficult. The file structure inside the WD should be different than QNAP one.
So contents in those drives, when you put them inside the QNAP NAS might not be recognized by the system, and it may ask you to format the drive … Be careful, selecting Yes to format will cause everything gone.
Thanks HanzSung. I want to reuse these drives, so to be safe I will copy everything to another storage device, then migrate the drives to the QNAP, formate, setup my shares and copy everything to the new setup. The WD still works good and meets my current needs, but it relies on SMBv1 protocol which supposedly has serious security vulnerabilities.
Yes. Move contents on it to another safe place, and you can plug the hard drive into the NAS and erase everything/re-partitioning by QNAP NAS.
After the process, you will have a ready-to-use system and move the data back to the NAS.
By the way for SMBv1, as the system is inside your LAN I personally will not consider it a severe problem. However, the poor performance will be a good reason for moving to more advanced SMB3 protocols.
