I just updated the firmware today on my TS-873A. Now Multimedia Console is recreating all the thumbnails, redoing face recognition, etc. This seems to happen after every firmware upgrade - why?
Same thing really goes for QSirch too - it had to reindex everything.
Why does the NAS do this?

Could you let me know which firmware upgrade to which firmware and share the debug log of Multimedia Console with us to evaluate what happened?
I had to reboot TVS-h1688x QuTS 5.2.9.3499 for a different problem (ticket) and I noticed that face recognition was regenerating.
I don’t remember the previous FW version (it was the latest before this new one), but I upgraded to h5.2.9.3499.
I am not sure it’s just FW updates that cause this. I’m pretty sure I have seen it after reboots as well.

My Qsirch re-scans every file after reboot, but seems that’s faster than initial indexing and it’s just checking for any unknown updates on the file.
Sometimes I see face-recognition being re-generated after I upgrade the QNAP AI Core.
Agreed, but there’s no reason to re-index after a reboot. If Qsirch knew all the files that were indexed before the reboot, it’s impossible that any files changed AFTER rebooting. So this makes no sense. Same thing with facial recognition. If everything has been maintained all along, doing it after a reboot is a waste or resources and CPU time.
I have got the Debug Log and forwarded it to the team for analysis. I will update here on any progress, thanks.
@NA9D the team has check the logs and found the root cause.
Routine Check: The “re-indexing” after a reboot is just a standard background database check, not a full rebuild.
The Real Trigger: The massive thumbnail regeneration was actually triggered by the installation of the CAYIN Media Viewer. It will force a rebuild of any thumbnails that had previously failed to generate.
Timeline Clarification: The logs show that thumbnail generation was already running before the firmware update started on 5/23. It simply resumed after the NAS rebooted.
Chain Reaction: Facial recognition automatically re-runs only for those newly generated thumbnails.
So the re-indexing is just a quick check after reboot and the Thumbnail Generation is continue unfinished task from before the reboot. You can try to reboot again after the Thumbnail Generation completed, this time should be a quick reindex but no more thumbnails will be generated.
So first of all, I did not just install CAYIN Media Viewer. It’s been installed forever. So not sure what that would have to do with anything.
Was not aware that thumbnails were being generated. I would expect thumbnails to be generated for new photos but the system went through ALL photos again.
That’s the issue.
And reindexing after the reboot still takes a lot of resources. Not sure why it would need to do that. Again - no files would have changed during the time the system is rebooting. It would not be possible…
As I know the index may not consume many system resource but the Thumbnail Generation does.
Base on the RD observed from the debug logs, some Thumbnail Generation were not finished before the reboot ant they continued after the reboot, this is what you saw.
We recommend that you can wait until all Thumbnail Generation are finished and than try to reboot again, this time should no thumbnails will be generated.
Indexing consumes plenty of resources.
Now, I don’t know what thumbnail generation was ongoing. The only thing I can think of is that it would have been maybe 5 or 10 pictures that were uploaded to the NAS from my phone. But that’s it and that wouldn’t take long. No, the thumbnail generation was redone on EVERTHING. It took hours and maybe more than a day…
