I have a 1090FU with the following QTier configuration:
Pool 2: 2x7.68TB NVME SSD (High speed)
Pool 3: 8x24TB HDD RAID 6 (in a 24 bay PES expansion) (Low-speed)
Pool 4: 8x24TB HDD RAID 6 (in a 24 bay PES expansion) (Low-speed)
Pool 5: 8x24TB HDD RAID 6 (in a 24 bay PES expansion) (Low-speed)
I would like the expand the Raid group 2 with an additional 7.68TB drive, thus requiring RAID 5. I have the extra disk installed and it is recongized just fine. When I try to expand the pool it only lets me select RAID groups 3-5, but not group 2.
Is this because there is only a single disk available and it there must be 2 drives to expand the mirror? (I actually have one more drive to add bringing the total to 4, but it is not ready to swapped from another device)
Lets say I expanded the mirror to 4 drives, is there any way of converting that configuration to RAID 5?
Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like i can only add two disks to the existing raid1. Getting a raid5 array will require draining and removing the high speed group, but there needs to be an update for that.
QuTS hero 5.1 and higher:In-place -RAID-level-migrationfromRAID-5 to RAID-6 is supported, requires two incremental drives (not just one).
Note 1: This only applies to QNAP’s OpenZFS implementation in QuTS hero. In OpenZFS latest version 2.4.x this is not possible.
Note 2: I have tested it myself. If you just choose one drive an error-message will appear before the migration process starts, you need to choose 2 drives.
QuTS hero 5.1 and higher:In-place -RAID-level-migrationfromRAID-0 (single drive) to RAID-1 (Mirror) is notsupported.
Note: I have tested it myself. The option “RAID 1” remains greyed out when you select a new drive.
QuTS hero 5.1 and higher:In-place -RAID-level-migrationfromRAID-1toRAID-5 or RAID-6 is notsupported.
Note: I have tested it myself. You only get the option “Triple RAID” when you select a newly-added drive. The option “RAID 5” is greyed-out.
Unfortunately this is not documented in QNAP’s QuTS hero documentation or it is “hidden” somewhere else in the QuTS hero documentation.
I thus have opened a QNAP support-ticket and asked the QNAP team to add this extremely useful feature to the documentation.
Until I stumbled into this community thread I diddn’t know myself. For years!
